The Role

Teaching Assistant supporting teaching and learning in a secondary school

Five days a week

On behalf of one of our partnership school's, we are looking to recruit a Tutor for their Alternative provision. The Behaviour Tutor role is to start end of September 2021 initially on a long term basis, however the school are looking to make this role permanent for the right candidate.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Behaviour Tutor to support the learning of students within the Academy's brand new on-site Alternative Provision facility. Working under the direction of the Alternative Provision Manager, you will be required to lead and support lessons to improve the achievement and behaviour of identified students, who, despite a number of interventions, are at risk of permanent exclusion. As part of this role you will also be required to work with small intervention groups, to assist in the delivery and implementation of the Academy's Literacy and Numeracy strategies.

You must be a confident communicator, resilient, and have an absolute commitment to wanting the best for children and young people. With the ability to co-ordinate and organise resources effectively you will have the drive and determination to motivate disengaged students, acting as a positive role model for individuals and groups of students.

About the role:

  • Behaviour Mentor / PRU Teaching Assistant for a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in Manchester
  • Starting ASAP on a full time & long term basis, paying up to £80/day.
  • Hours are 8:45am-3:15pm Monday to Friday.
  • Supporting pupils with Social, Emotional & Mental Health needs (SEMH).
  • Your role will be to maintain good behaviour in class and around the site in order for young people to make social and emotional progress as well as facilitate an excellent learning environment
  • You must be able to build relationships quickly.
  • You will need to be resilient, empathetic, patient and not take things too personally.
  • You will need to be able to demonstrate correct behaviour and act as positive and trusted role model.
  • You will be required to work with the teaching staff to monitor behaviour, recognise triggers and prevent crisis situations from occurring.

You must have previous experience in one of the following roles where you've supported children with SEMH or challenging behaviours:

  • Behaviour Mentor
  • PRU Teaching Assistant
  • SEMH Teaching Assistant
  • Secondary Teaching Assistant
  • Youth Worker
  • Residential Support Worker
  • Sports Coach
  • Other child focused role where you've supported children with challenging behaviours



About the school:

  • Secondary PRU catering for over 100 young people with SEMH and challenging behaviours.
  • Class sizes of no more than 10 pupils.
  • Broad curriculum based on childrens' needs and interests including ASDAN vocational learning lessons.
  • Strong focus on helping pupils manage their emotions and behaviour in order to prepare them for learning and the world after education.
  • Links with local colleges and employers to ensure transitions to study or apprenticeships.



About the pupils:

  • All pupils are aged 11-16 and have an EHCP for SEMH, ADHD, Autism & challenging behaviour.
  • Many are from very vulnerable backgrounds and need support from a Behaviour Mentor that is patient, empathetic and engaging.
  • Pupils are working at lower than expected levels for their age and so your approach and support will need to reflect what stage they are working at and focus on areas where progress can be made whether that's emotionally, socially, behaviourally or academically.
