How To Be More Diverse And Equal

Introduction

Ethnically diverse boards are more likely to outperform on profits. According to the companies in the top ¼ for ethnic diversity, they are 33% more likely to achieve a profit above the industry average.

The internal awareness of diverse culture

To create internal awareness of diverse culture diversity training through seminars and workshops are useful. The purpose of this is to give employees and managers a better understanding of the differences of their team members they are working alongside. Adjusting one’s attitude if only slightly can create an amazing team and this ensures that people realize that these differences are a valued part of the team.

Inclusive job adverts and minority publications advertisements

Inclusive job adverts remove unconscious bias. Figures show that women only apply for jobs where they have over 80% of the required skills whereas men apply for roles that they have less than 50% of the required skills.

Advertising with minority publications can make your company more diverse because advertisements from Specialist publications and websites are aimed at minority groups, this helps to expand to a wider outreach and find unexplored talent and employment opportunities.

Establishing a sense of belonging

To have a sense of belonging is to have a connection to an organization or group of people that make you feel like you can be yourself and not just creatively but psychologically too. Creating that inclusive culture is essential before establishing belonging as it is something that takes time and this will make your company more diverse because a sense of belonging is the first step to thriving in your chosen career.

Job coaches

Providing in-house work coaches may be helpful for people with Autism and those with other disabilities to ensure they are comfortable in the workplace and can concentrate on their work properly. This kind of support applies to the recruitment process and throughout their careers too. This helps to avoid situations where talented individuals are left unemployed from anxiety and stress. This is one of the most useful tips to creating a more inclusive and diverse company because it reduces anxiety for those with disabilities or even those who find it difficult to manage their mental health.

Your brand

Brand and culture are connected. Your products and services are a reflection of your values and biases. It is important to remember diversity and inclusion isn't just an initiative or a program it requires real behavior change. Diversity and inclusion is a big part of your brand because it affects how the entire company operates and it symbolizes the individual ways of working, communicating, contributing and just being.

Company website/ career's page should showcase its diversity

Creating a sense of belonging and inclusivity culture can be helpful because this may give people more of a reason to look at the rest of your website. After all, it displays some important values that make your company reliable.

Social Media

The use of social media as a company is another important tip. It is a way to give people insight into your company. For example, you may have coaches that support employees with their stress and anxiety, but people aren’t going to know that if you hadn’t shown that it is an important part of your workplace.  However, some companies may put a person of colour in a picture and think that proves they are diverse. What you want people to take away from seeing your company on social media is that you’re already being diverse and you don’t need to go out of your way to prove this.

I hope that you found these tips useful and will give some of them a try.
